High quality red grape variety recommended for the Monção sub-region of the Vinhos Verdes Demarcated Region where it is intensively cultivated. Less productive, it produces ruby to light ruby colour wines with a delicate aroma, harmonious and flavourous.

Synonymy: or «Brancelhão» in Monção; it is known as «Alvarelhão» in the South of the region and as «Pirruivo» in Arouca; corresponding to the «Alvarelhão» of the Douro region, and probably to the «Brancellao» of the Spanish Province Galicia.
