For the December issue Mark Squires did a end-of-year roundup, with a bit of an extra emphasis on reds from Setúbal, centered around Castelão grape variety. Pegos Claros and Pegos Claros Reserva, produced by Herdade de Pegos Claros, were tasted.

WINE ENTHUSIAST OCTOBER 2024

88 Points -  Andreza Reserva White D.O.C. Douro 2023
“Lemon and grapefruit flavors give this wine a crisp yet rounded character. Young, but already balanced, the wine has a refreshing quality. Drink from 2025.”

88 Points -  Claro Red D.O.C. Palmela 2021
“The vanilla aroma of this textured wine leads to ripe tannins that need further aging. It is a juicy wine with black-currant fruits. Give the wine more time and drink from 2025.”

88 Points -  Lua Cheia Reserva White D.O.C. Douro 2022
“Produced from old vines in a field blend, the wine has floral and sliced-apple aromas. Lightly textured and with fine citrus acidity, the wine is ready to drink.”

94 Points -  Pegos Claro Grande Escolha Red D.O.C. Palmela 2018
“A ripe black-fruit aroma and polished, succulent black fruits are the hallmarks of this wine. A year in wood has greatly enhanced its richness and texture. It is now densely mature and ready to drink.”

93 Points -  Primo Red D.O.C. Palmela 2017
“Produced from old vines influenced by the Atlantic coastal atmosphere, the wine was aged in large barrels giving spice and vanilla aromas. The black fruits now give secondary flavors and a dense texture. It is a fine wine, ready to drink now.”

89 Points -  Secretum Reserva Red D.O.C. Palmela 2021
“The local Castelão variety dominates this wine, giving a pepper and spice edge to the wine's juicy black fruits. It has a warm, rich toffee character, finishing with a burst of young tannins. Drink from 2025.”

89 Points -  Pegos Claros Tintinha Red D.O.C. Palmela 2019
“Produced from a small sandy parcel near the Atlantic coast of a rediscovered variety, Tintinha, this wine has black truffle and pepper aromas. It is a richly dense wine with juicy black fruits and satisfying tannins for a long finish. It is ready to drink, but will be better from 2025. “
